Why so many homes in Cyprus filter their water
Mains water in Cyprus is treated and supplied to drinking-water standards, so filtration is usually not about safety. It is about taste, odour and mineral content. Much of the island's supply is hard, and a large share comes from desalination and boreholes, which affects how the water tastes straight from the tap. Many households also want to stop buying bottled water, both for cost and for the plastic it creates. Our article on whether tap water is safe to drink in Cyprus covers this in more detail.
Hard water and limescale
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. You notice it as white scale on kettles, taps and shower screens, soap that does not lather well, and appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and boilers that lose efficiency or fail earlier than they should. Scale is a plumbing and appliance problem rather than a health one, but it is expensive over time.
Two different products address two different problems. Water softeners reduce hardness across the whole property and protect pipes and appliances from scale. Reverse osmosis systems sit at a single tap and remove a very high proportion of dissolved solids, which is what changes the taste of drinking water. A property with heavy scale and poor-tasting drinking water often ends up with both.
The main types of water filter, and who each one suits
Under-sink and carbon filters are the simplest step up from a jug. They improve taste and reduce chlorine, install quickly and need a cartridge change once or twice a year. They suit renters and anyone whose only complaint is taste.
Reverse osmosis systems push water through a membrane and strip out most dissolved minerals and contaminants. They produce the purest drinking water of the common options, take up cupboard space and need periodic membrane and filter replacement.
Whole-house filtration treats water at the point it enters the property, so every tap and shower benefits. It is the right choice when the issue is sediment, discolouration or general water quality rather than drinking water alone.
Water dispensers — mains-fed or bottled — are common in offices and in homes that want chilled or hot filtered water on demand without altering the plumbing. Commercial water treatment covers larger installations for hotels, restaurants, clinics and industrial sites, where flow rate, compliance and servicing matter as much as the equipment itself.
What to look for when choosing a supplier
A water filtration system is an ongoing relationship, not a one-off purchase. The cartridges, membranes and servicing matter more over five years than the price on day one. When comparing companies, the practical questions are: how long they have been trading, whether they have a physical shop or showroom you can actually visit, whether they install the system themselves, whether replacement filters are easy to get, and whether technical support and after-sales service are available when something goes wrong. Those are the same factors set out side by side in the comparison table, and they are explained further in our guide on how to choose a water filtration company.
